Sponsored Walk - Saturday 29th August 2009

Many years ago, paddle steamers like EMBASSY(ex DUCHESS OF NORFOLK) and MONARCH (ex SHANKLIN) were known to cruise from Swanage Pier towards St. Albans Head.

The day had now arrived for me to leave Swanage Pier at 1.30pm on Saturday 29th August 2009 not by sea, but on a sponsored walk to help raise funds for the £350.000 Engine Appeal towards St. Albans Head. Having left the Pier on time, my walk took me past Peveril Point, Durlston Head, Tilly Whim Caves, Anvil Point Lighthouse at 2.00pm. The walk was now under way, my thoughts on this warm sunny afternoon went to our beloved MEDWAY QUEEN and the Society set up to save this historic ship. Blackers Hole, Dancing Ledge famous for the swimming pool in the rocks below was passed at 3.15pm. On my arrival at Seacombe just like the old paddle-boats it was time to turn round. My way back to Swanage took me past the delightful JURASSIC SCENE (ex TORBAY BELLE ex LOCHMOR) on a cruise, looking very smart and busy. This part of the glorious Dorset Coast slipped by and Anvil Point Lighthouse was reached again at 4.50pm. Rounding Durlston Castle it was not long before Peveril Point, town of Swanage and Bay came into view. Having made good time my arrival back on the Pier was at 5.20pm.

Medway Queen Fortnight in Swanage

From the 13th till 27th August 2011 there will be a series of events held around the Dorset seasside town of Swanage in order to raise money for the Medway Queen.
