A few years ago we were honoured to add Sir William McAlpine to our list of patrons and it is with great sadness that we now have to report his passing on March 4th this year. His enthusiasm for steam machinery extended from trains to boats and he was present in Bristol when PS. Medway Queen was re-dedicated back in 2013. He is pictured here inspecting the engine room and chatting to Mark and Pam Bathurst (Picture courtesy of Richard Abels).
I can do no better than to link to the "Henley Standard" for a resume of Sir Williams life and interests. I was lucky enough to meet him on several occasions and we regularly took Medway Queen promotional stalls to the Henley Traditional Boat Festival and to steam events at his home at Fawley Hill, near Henley-on-Thames. He was "Bill" to everyone and very down to earth. The preservation movements will miss him and we extend our condolences to Lady McAlpine and all the family.
