The work on restoring the Medway Queen has been in progress for over 30 years. It has taken us from a rusting hulk that sat on the bottom of the River Medway to the rather magnificent ship you can visit on most Saturdays. The workshop is not open to visitors during the week but is included in the tour on open days.
The workshop is situated opposite the Ship. It is manned by a team of volunteers, all retired. None of them are from the maritime industry but bring a wealth of experience from other industries; these include (but not limited to), construction, electrical and mechanical engineering, IT, power generation industry. They also bring an even larger amount of enthusiasm and a 'can do' attitude. Where possible all the work to restore and enhance the Medway Queen is done in house and we only bring in specialist services where we cannot provide it ourselves or where there is a legal requirement for registered trade services.
Whilst we aim to be true to the original design of the Medway Queen, some variations are necessary to ensure that it complies with prevailing safety standards, and that access and facilities are comfortable for all abilities where possible. We are also aiming to make the Medway Queen available as a static venue for hire for parties, meetings, etc. Work to achieve this is ongoing, Follow the links below to see some of the recently complete projects, the work that is currently being undertaken ands the projects that are planned but not started.
To enable the work we rely heavily of the generous support of our members and other individuals and organisations. We thank all of them and thank those who have and continue to contribute to the costs of individual projects. To enable us to continue to maintain the Medway Queen, the Medway Queen Visitor Centre, and the workshop we rely on income from visitors, donations, and bequests. To support the work we ask you to donate via the link on the button above, or where we request support for a particular project. Follow the links to the relevant project pages below.
