Dunkirk commemorative wagons

New promotional wagons for Medway Queen are available.

Based on Dapol box, vans these 00 gauge models commemorate Medway Queen’s part in the Dunkirk Evacuation of 1940. In May-June 1940 HMS Medway Queen made seven round trips to Dunkirk rescuing thousands of British, French and Belgian troops. The models are a departure from the usual “Gillingham Pier” theme and feature Ramsgate where Medway Queen landed her evacuee passengers on six of her seven trips. The models are available in two colours, as usual; dark brown and maroon.
We have held the price per model at £12.90 but, over the years, both post and packaging costs have risen and we now find it necessary to charge £3.75 for UK P&P per order. The wagons are available from our “Medway Queen West” support group; a pair of wagons plus P&P comes to £29.55

For an extra £8 you can add a copy of “HMS Medway Queen Memories of Dunkirk” to your order with no extra postage charge.

Heritage Open Days have added a blog to their website - a history of Medway Queen illustrated by "8 curious objects".

A selection of 8 items from the MQPS or members' private collections that illustrate various periods in the ship's history.

Well worth a look!

The example (left) is Jim Chivers' Dunquerque Medal. Jim was brought home from Dunkirk by HMS medway Queen and generously left his medals to the society when he died in June 2018. Jim had appeared in several documentary programmes about MQ and Dunkirk.

Dunkirk Day by Day

"Dunkirk Day by Day" sponsored blog
This is a sponsored blog with the aim of raising £7000 for the Medway Queen. The ship's crew estimated they had saved 7000 men so that is just £1 for each soldier. Over the coming days this account will be updated on a daily basis to record events in the evacuation from the perspective of HMS Medway Queen’s crew until 5th June. If you find this account interesting please support us. Covid-19 has wiped out our regular visitor income and the Ramsgate event would have generated considerably more than that if it had taken place. A £10 donation is less than £1 per post! We are all volunteers so any purchase or donation directly benefits the ship.

Best wishes from HMS Medway

At least we don’t (usually) have to worry about hurricanes on top of Covid-19.

 Memories of Dunkirk
Medway Queen is affiliated to HMS Medway; a river class patrol vessel, commissioned in Chatham last September.

Lieutenant Commander Jim Blythe, the current Commanding Officer of HMS Medway, has written with his best wishes for the Medway Queen Preservation Society. HMS Medway is currently deployed to the Caribbean where they will defend the nation’s security and promote UK interests. Lt. Cmdr. Blythe tells us that “the Caribbean is currently in a difficult situation. With the global pandemic and hurricane season around the corner the Caribbean nations now more than ever are looking towards us for assistance. We are therefore poised to act in whatever capacity they require.” He goes on to tell us that the ship has recently completed maintenance tasks and has embarked key stores so as to be ready to give assistance when a hurricane hits.  To “be able to deliver life-saving supplies to the worst affected areas.”

Lieutenant Commander Blythe has commanded mine-hunters in the past and was the navigator in HMS Cardiff during the 2005 Spithead Review. He was kind enough to comment that he found the mine-sweeping and Review of the Fleet chapters of our book “The Medway Queen” particularly interesting. Naturally we hope to welcome him and any other members of the ship’s company to Gillingham Pier and Medway Queen when visiting becomes possible again.
